Dr. Supriya Rao and Dr. Naresh Gunaratnam interview Sarah Kennedy, founder and CEO of Calocurb, a New Zealand company that makes a non-prescription appetite management supplement. Calocurb’s active ingredient is Amarasate, a bitter hops extract that activates bitter taste receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, prompting the body to release its own appetite-suppressing hormones, including the GLP-1 that the prescription weight-loss drugs supply synthetically.

Amarasate came out of a New Zealand government-funded program that screened more than a thousand plant extracts before settling on a single hop variety. Because it works by stimulating the body’s own hormone release rather than delivering a synthetic one, satiety hormones rise and fall closer to the pattern that normally follows a meal. In the company’s fourth clinical trial, published in Obesity Pillars, participants lost significantly more body fat than placebo over 24 weeks, and researchers found no loss of muscle mass, a known concern with GLP-1 medications.

Join Dr. Gunaratnam, Dr. Rao, and Ms. Kennedy as they discuss how appetite is regulated in the gut and where Calocurb fits alongside the daily habits that sustain long-term metabolic health.
